The dairy heifer is the future of the dairy herd but too many are not treated with this goal in mind. All too often they are turned out in spring and left to get on with it.

For two year calving to be achieved the Friesian Holstein heifer must grow at an average of at least 0.75kg/day.  In the first half of the grazing season this is readily achievable where plentiful supplies of lush spring grass will normally mean gains of 0.9kg/day.  However, in the second half of the summer, daily liveweight gains can drop to as little as 0.3kg/day as the grass quality declines and this pulls the overall summer gain down to 0.6kg/day.  This is well below target.  If extended rearing time is applied then there is an increased requirement for the number of heifers held at any one time on the farm.  The idea is to achieve a 2 year calving weight of around 600kg.  It is also worth noting that similar targets should be applied to replacement suckler heifers.  The longer it takes to get them into the herd the more cost is applied.

The answer is to provide supplementary feeding at grass which can prove difficult if Heifers are away from the main farm. At Scotmin this a subject that is dear to our hearts.
