Focus on… Lambing

With three-quarters of foetal growth in the last 6-8 weeks of gestation, good nutrition of the ewe is essential during this critical period.

Below are some Top Tips to reduce the risk of Twin Lamb Disease and improve the performance of your flock:

Keep ewes in correct body condition

  • condition score 3 for lowland, 2 for hill ewes

Use good forage in late pregnancy

  • feed poorer material first, keeping the best for the last month

Commence supplementary feeding 6-8 weeks before lambing

  • provide a rising plane of nutrition, start twice daily feeding when intake of hard feed reaches 0.2 Kg.
  • whole grains are used more efficiently

Ensure that drinking water is always available

  • keep troughs clean, check supply is not frozen

Assess the Vitamin E & Selenium status of the diet

  • supplement the diet to reduce lamb mortality

Feed Scotmin Pre-Lambing Tubs for the last 3-4 weeks

  • the complete supplement for late pregnancy with high Vitamin E
